Woody is our school dog at St Edward’s and a much-loved member of our school family. He follows in the footsteps of Arlo, whose calm presence made a real difference to many of our children. Woody is a young spaniel, who belongs to our Headteacher, and has grown up in a busy family home surrounded by children. This early experience means he is gentle, calm and well suited to life in a school environment.
Just like all new members of our community, Woody is being given time to settle in. His introduction to school is gradual and carefully managed, allowing him to become familiar with the sights, sounds, and routines of daily school life. This helps him feel safe and confident, which in turn supports positive and calm interactions with children.
Woody particularly enjoys spending time in the office at the start of the day and has a quiet, designated space in the Headteacher’s office where he can rest when needed. Having a safe and calm space is an important part of supporting his wellbeing.
There is a growing body of research which shows that children who struggle with relationships, anxiety or emotional regulation can benefit greatly from spending time with a school dog. A calm canine presence can help children feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.

Woody plays an important role in helping us live out our vision of One Family – We CARE, ensuring that every child feels welcome, connected and that they belong.
Woody is always supervised by trained staff and is never allowed to roam the school unsupervised. His time in school is carefully planned, risk assessed and reviewed regularly.
If you would like Woody to work with your child, or if your child has any worries or concerns about dogs, please contact us via email or ClassDojo so that we can support them appropriately.
