Welcome to Year 4
Spring Term 2020
Class Teacher : Mr Mitchell
Our topic this term is . . .
Land of Hope and Glory
This term our topic has a Geography focus.
We will be studying the geography of the United Kingdom and we will be exploring the counties (England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland), flags and capital cities. We will look at discovering and comparing the differences between town, country, rural and urban. Another aspect will we look at is the physical geography of rivers, mountains and coastlines. We will be investigating the similarities and differences in the different countries food, culture etc. We will also explore the effects of storms and floods.
Please see the topic overview for further details.
Our Science topic this term is Forces and Magnets. We will be looking at how things move on different surfaces. We will also learn about what magnets are and magnetism. We will then investigate and explore magnetic poles. Our famous scientist linked to our science topic we will explore is famous astronomer Isaac Newton.
Our PE days are Monday and Wednesday. Please ensure correct and appropriate PE kit is in school at all times.
The children will have weekly spellings along with sentences for dictation to practise at home.
Each day in Handwriting sessions we will be focusing on practising the spelling patterns and writing our spellings correctly, using joined handwriting.
The PTFA have purchased a great times table package for the school called 'TT Rockstars'. There are lots of different areas the children could go into including the ‘Garage’ or ‘Studio’. The Garage is a training mode where they work through the tables (recommended) and the Studio is random questions up to the 12x12 times table. Ultimately, we hope this makes learning the times tables fun while they become more fluent and knowledgeable in their times table recall. They can also earn ‘coins’ to update their avatar rock star!
Please keep 'firing' multiplication facts at your child so they have the answers at their finger tips!!
Homework will continue to be sent home each Friday and should be returned to school by the following Wednesday. Spelling Tests this term will be on Friday.
We are all looking forward to another fun, jam packed term with lots and lots of learning going on!
If you have any worries, concerns or questions, please feel free to pop in and see me after school or contact me through class Dojo.
Year Four Reminders
All of the children have moved onto the Renaissance Reader book scheme and they should be bringing home a number banded book every day. We already have lots of children who are keen to complete their quizzes. I have reminded the children that the quiz tests their understanding of the book and as we are looking for at least 80%+ for a pass rate on their quiz, we always advise to read the book through at least twice before attempting the quiz. Children should be taking quizzes regularly (ideally once every week) and they should know the results of their quiz. Remember you can register with the website and receive text/email alerts with your child's test results.
Please make sure you are continuing to read regularly with your child ~ they should be bringing their books home EVERY day!!
PE is timetabled for Monday/Wednesday afternoons, but make sure your child has their indoor AND outdoor PE kit in school at all times.
Please ensure that your child has a clear water bottle, with a sports type cap, in school every day and that they bring it home to be washed out and refilled!
Please support us in sending your child to school in appropriate uniform and footwear. All clothes should be clearly labelled to reduce incidents of lost property.
Whilst children are provided with all the stationary they require, I understand that many parents wish to support their children by providing extra items. If this is the case, can you please ensure such items are labelled clearly and encourage your child not to exchange or give away items to others.
All school events and activities are noted on the school newsletter: The Steady Eddy.
